Apple and the iWatch
With all the speculation that has gone on around the rumors of the iWatch,
the most surprising revelation, to me at least, has been the number of tech
pundits who don’t wear watches. The same people who love the Jawbone Up
and the Nike Fuelband
don’t wear watches? Makes it seem like they might not be horribly qualified
to discuss the watch market, doesn’t it.
It seems that there is a divide...

One of the best looking skeletonized watches I’ve seen. Love how this looks with the large open spaces.

Mozilla's Rust… oh and Servo too →
I find it telling that the part of this announcement that I’m most interested in is Rust, and that the article on ARS spends most of it’s time talking about that. Servo isn’t really the focus of the article it seems.
Good luck Mozilla and Samsung. The world needs to get more rendering engine competition going again.
Meanwhile, I’ll be checking out Rust.

Serious Outside the Box Engineering →
A very interesting find by Panic and interesting discussion (especially this comment) about how Apple designed the Lightning video adapter with an ARM SoC that decodes a compressed video stream from the iOS device and outputs the video on the AV outputs.
The design of this means that the iOS device can output video to any device type as long as there is an adapter that can talk to it. This of...

Hypercritical: CES: Worse Products Through... →
siracusa:
Watching the CES coverage out of the corner of my Internet eye, I’m reminded of exactly how bad most hardware makers are at writing software. Mat Honan summed it up nicely last month: No One Uses Smart TV Internet Because It Sucks. Amen to that. But it’s not just TVs. Who really likes the…
Very astute analysis; but it must be noted that the sorry state of “apps” on TVs is not just...

Skeuomorphism Isn't the Real Problem →
Kontra absolutely nails the issues with Apple’s current UI/UX:
Apple’s software problems aren’t dark linen, Corinthian leather or torn paper. In fact, Apple’s software problems aren’t much about aesthetics at all…they are mostly about experience.
…
In the end, what’s wrong with iOS isn’t the dark linen behind the app icons at the bottom of the screen, but the fact that iOS ought to have...

Markdown Still Broken in Tumblr's iOS App
Looks like tumblr still doesn’t support using Markdown in the latest iOS app update. The following should be a link:
[Markdown](http://daringfireball.net/projects/markdown/)
Which, clearly it is not. Instead you have to enter raw HTML to get it to work:
Markdown
Why is this still broken? It works via email and even the mobile web site.

SmartGlass Stillborn? →
“Xbox SmartGlass launches on Windows 8 tablets and PCs on Oct. 26. It will be available on Windows Phone 8 when those devices launch,” the company told the Penny Arcade Report. “Xbox SmartGlass will become available on select iOS and Android models soon. We have nothing further to announce at this time.”

This isn’t the launch of a feature, it’s a middle finger. iOS and Android support...

The pricing seems reasonable, but I’m surprised that they don’t have any
cellular data connectivity. Seems like it will limit the usage of the

Well, Fuck… →
As Gruber says, this looks to be a total cluster fuck.
Question 1 is why the FBI has this info and question 2 is what this group plans to do with it now and how much damage can it do.
Also, something really has to be done about these Java holes.

Steam Comes to Linux, Stallman Not Enthusiastic;... →
At least he isn’t outright hostile:
“This development can do both harm and good. It might encourage GNU/Linux users to install these games, and it might encourage users of the games to replace Windows with GNU/Linux,” he wrote. “My guess is that the direct good effect will be bigger than the direct harm. But there is also an indirect effect: what does the use of these games teach people...

Google Fiber Is The Very Best Of Google →

Milo Medin of Google:
It’s easy to forget how revolutionary high-speed Internet access was in the 1990s. Not only did broadband kill the screeching sound of dial-up, it also spurred innovation, helping to create amazing new services as well as new job opportunities for many thousands of Americans. But today the Internet is not as fast as it should be. While high speed technology...

Nintendo Reports Operating Loss Of $132M →
parislemon:
When I read news like this, I get sad because I love Nintendo.
But not too sad, because I hold out hope that this somehow leads to Nintendo games coming to Apple devices.
Losses like these make me sad for the big N, but I don’t think releasing on Apple hardware would help them. Take a look at how Sega and Atari are doing. Both still exist but are very pale shadows of their former...

Microsoft kept PC partners in dark about Surface →
Microsoft Corp kept its personal computer partners largely in the dark about its plans to launch a competing tablet computer, with some long-time collaborators learning of the new gadget only days before its unveiling, according to people with knowledge of the matter.
Well no shit. If you intend to put someone out of business (or maybe we should say their misery) you don’t tell them...

Belkin AirCast
I picked up the Belkin AirCast about a month ago to replace an old, broken down, car kit I had been using. My previous kit had a cradle with a dock connector on the bottom to charge my iPhone, and a plastic hook that went over the top and held it down while a head set style jack plugged into the iPhone’s head set jack. This worked fine for quite a while, but had problems with different...

The Greatest Reaction
Mike Monteiro has the greatest reaction to the CNN/Mashable deal. Now, I don’t object to CNN buying a more modern news site to jazz things up, but… Mashable? Really?
Ever walk into the toilet and find a turd already there and just drop yours on top of it to save a flush? Well CNN is buying Mashable.— Mike Monteiro (@Mike_FTW) March 12, 2012

Some spectacular Apple hate in this Financial Post article:
It now appears that Apple’s move from second to third generation iPad is even less of a bold leap forward and more of a tepid shuffle from an underwhelming top dog.
Their follow up when Apple once again sets sales records and the new iPad officially a hit should be good…

Halo 4 behind the scenes →
Pretty cool little video showing some Halo 4 footage and describing some of the changes/updates from previous games.
Watching it, I’m struck by how different the Spartan IV’s look, and that this is the first Halo I can remember where the multi-player models are completely different than the campaign. Either way, the graphics look awesome, with much better lighting and atmospheric...

Google's Glasses →
So many possible jokes with this…
But the biggest question is where are they storing the electronics? A 3G (and even more for 4G LTE) chipset will take up some room, and a battery that will last more than a few minutes will be big and heavy. Hard to imagine that they will fit all that into a pair of glasses.
Also, as a glasses wearer, I guess I’m out since they don’t sound like...

Kotaku’s Vita Review →
Hmm… 5 hours of battery life, $100 for a 32 gig card, $50 per game (at least for AAA titles), and the best games for the system are ports from other Sony consoles?
Sounds like a winning sales pitch to me…
The hardware does look cool, and it sounds powerful, but the hidden cost of the memory cards and the very uncertain nature of the gaming line up just makes it a non-starter for me. And if...

For $150 to $200, users will be able to buy non-Apple smartphones with most of the conveniences of the iPhone, Zabitsky said.
Someone should tell him you can get a 3GS for Free, or a iPhone 4 for $99 and have a phone with all the conveniences of the iPhone.

Replacing menus in modern desktop UI →
Who would have thought that we would be seeing something new, interesting, and functional looking in the UI arena coming from a Linux distribution.
What I didn’t see in this article is any description of how one invokes the HUD. I would assume it’s a keystroke, but what do you choose that is both non-conflicting and obvious.
Either way, a very interesting development!
