Forget Xbox One: 2014 could be Nintendo’s year | Fox News

While I love Nintendo and never want to see them fail, this article seems very naive. In particular:

In the last few months, “Pikmin 3,” “Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD” and the sublime “Super Mario 3D World” have dazzled reviewers, nixing criticism that the Wii U lacks games.

I wouldn’t say that three games, even if they are “sublime” is enough to nix the criticism that the Wii U lacks games. He’ll, one of the three is just a HD re-release.

2014 should be a good year in terms of titles, with “Bayonetta 2,” “Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze,” “Mario Kart 8” and “Super Smash Bros. U” all slated for release for the Wii U — a strong lineup by any standards.

Four games is not a strong lineup; though I’m sure Mario Kart and Smash Bros. will bring in some sales.

I really hope Nintendo does well in 2014, but it increasingly looks like it’s going to be a handheld dominated year.

SmartGlass Stillborn?

“Xbox SmartGlass launches on Windows 8 tablets and PCs on Oct. 26. It will be available on Windows Phone 8 when those devices launch,” the company told the Penny Arcade Report. “Xbox SmartGlass will become available on select iOS and Android models soon. We have nothing further to announce at this time.”

This isn’t the launch of a feature, it’s a middle finger. iOS and Android support isn’t a neat thing they should be trying to achieve, it’s absolutely mandatory for SmartGlass to succeed.

Sounds like someone in the Windows group at Microsoft heard about SmartGlass and decided that it would hurt Windows if it released as a first class option on iOS or Android. It would be typical MS behavior to kill its own new product rather than let it hurt, or worse, embarrass, Windows or Office.

Sad really.

Steam Comes to Linux, Stallman Not Enthusiastic; News at 11

At least he isn’t outright hostile:

“This development can do both harm and good. It might encourage GNU/Linux users to install these games, and it might encourage users of the games to replace Windows with GNU/Linux,” he wrote. “My guess is that the direct good effect will be bigger than the direct harm. But there is also an indirect effect: what does the use of these games teach people in our community?”

He does call steam games on Linux “unethical because they deny freedom to their users.” Which is a bit much.

Nintendo Reports Operating Loss Of $132M

parislemon:

When I read news like this, I get sad because I love Nintendo.

But not too sad, because I hold out hope that this somehow leads to Nintendo games coming to Apple devices.

Losses like these make me sad for the big N, but I don’t think releasing on Apple hardware would help them.

Take a look at how Sega and Atari are doing. Both still exist but are very pale shadows of their former selves.

So far none of the console makers have ever figured out how to reverse the slide once it starts, so it may be their only route, but if they take it Nintendo as we know it is done.

TWiT’s new gaming show! A bit over produced, but still easily the best video game podcast I have seen so far.

Mass Effect 3: Tali - by Anthony Vani

My favorite character from the Mass Effect series and the only one I give a shit about for ME3. Well, her and maybe Joker.

Why do I get the feeling that RAGE is mostly a demo for a new engine? Maybe rather than everything being built on the Unreal engine, now they will be built on the RAGE engine. Either way, the game itself sounds, well, blah.
